« Out of track ». Voici un disque qui se faisait désirer. En effet, cela faisait déjà quelques mois que le trio du pianiste Giovanni Mirabassi, composé de Gianluca Renzi (contrebasse) et Leon Parker (batterie), s’agitait comme un poisson dans l’eau, et que leur précédent et unique opus ("Terra Furiosa", 2007) demandait une descendance.
Ce trio est indéniablement originaire de la lune, dont il porte la marque à chaque concert. Une puissance, une vénusté, où se mélange des extraits de quintessence rythmique et émotive de thèmes traditionnels et populaires (« Dear old Stockholm », piste 1 et « Le chant des partisans », piste 5), de standards de Astor Piazzolla ou John Coltrane (pistes 3, 4, 6, 8, 11) et de musique de film (« Convite para a vida » de Seu Jorge du film La Cité de Dieu, piste 11).
Dans les douze titres de « Out of track », la musique est tout simplement merveilleuse, et bon nombre de jazzfans s’y retrouveront, même parmi les amateurs en phase d’initiation. La symbiose des musiciens dépasse le cadre d’un enregistrement studio et d’un projet voué à être mercantile. Pas de séduction trop immédiate qui se dilue avec le temps. C’est tout le contraire ici et l’art du trio est à son apogée. Leur musique est exigeante. Ce qui domine, c’est la subtilité, la sensibilité sans sensiblerie, et l’interaction constante. Cet art du trio, le batteur Leon Parker n’y est pas pour rien - on se souviendra notamment des années passées avec Jacky Terrasson et Ugonna Okegwo - et de sa richesse de timbres, sons sens mélodico-rythmique, son minimalisme et son drive de fer sont souvent porteurs, et encore plus dans ce projet.
Après une écoute multiple de l’album, et d’au moins un concert (c’est un spectacle vivant), il est facile de se rendre compte du niveau d’écoute et de réaction exceptionnel dont ce trio est possédé. Plus qu’une rencontre de musiciens pointus, il s’agit d’une rencontre humaine dépourvue de superflu.
Sur chaque thème les musiciens remportent ce pari toujours périlleux de groover, de swinguer et de toucher. Composées comme des tableaux, les compositions sont faites de phrases classiques, uniques ou cubistes, et charment par leur évidence moderne, leur lyrisme. Inspiration, densité, son plein et charnu, l’album « Out of track » du trio Mirabassi-Renzi-Parker est une grande cuvée qui va se bonifier et faire de nouveaux disciples. Enfin, pour leur avenir prometteur, un enregistrement live est à souhaiter. A découvrir d'urgence !
